There are several new RTG automation projects under way in Japan, involving around 69 new RTGs and eight retrofit machines.
In November 2020, Mitsui E&S Machinery Co Ltd (MES) will deliver 22 RTGs to Nagoya United Container Terminal in Japan, in two equal deliveries in 2022. These machines feature automation and remote control. MES is also supplying automation systems for a further 13 machines as a subcontractor.
In addition, MES has an order for 17 new automated RTGs and five RTG automation conversions from a terminal in Shimizu. Another customer in Yokohama has ordered two new automated RTGs.
Mitsubishi Logisnext, another Japanese crane OEM, will supply 18 automated RTGs to the Kamigumi terminal in Kobe. Delivery of these machines is scheduled from March 2022 onwards. It is not known which company is supplying the drive and control systems for all these cranes, but the Japanese companies Fuji Electric, Yaskawa and TMIEC all offer crane automation systems.
Japan is home to the first terminal in the world to use automated and remote-controlled RTGs, with TCB Nagoya having introduced 12 machines from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 2005. The CATalyst for the renewed interest in RTG automation is government funding. In 2019, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport began a funding programme for remote control/automated RTGs, in part to help prepare the industry for what is expected to be a labour shortage in the country in the coming years.
